Volkswagen may not have invented the hatchback when it launched the Golf back in 1974, but it did create a premium product that all other car makers aspired to, and still do. Refined to drive and solidly constructed, the seventh-generation Golf remains one of the best and best-selling hatchbacks in the world, and is also available as an estate, cabriolet, and a sort of mini-MPV in the form of the tall Golf SV.

The Golf is a timeless car. Its shape and style remain selling point in this modern age. Mileage to the gallon, plenty of room for 4 passengers and good boot space are my favorite features. It has a range of engine sizes but the 1.6tdi is the ideal. An economical car to run which can suit both the enthusiast who wants performance but also the family person.
