Mazda2 (2015-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Improved safety after 2020 refresh | Boot is on the small side |
| Low running costs | Non-turbocharged engines can feel flat |
| Fun to drive | No EV model offered |
Quick Summary
The Mazda2 (2015-present) is an appealing and often overlooked supermini that delivers a well-rounded package. Now in its fourth generation, it features a distinctive 'wing' front grille and sporty bodywork lines that have been kept fresh through minor updates in 2018 and a full facelift in late 2019. With a relatively long wheelbase and smaller overhangs, the Mazda2 offers impressive interior space by supermini standards, though its 280-litre boot is smaller than newer rivals. The dashboard is well laid out with a neat central circular display, and whilst some plastics are hard, textured finishes and plusher materials elevate it above budget offerings.
The Mazda2 excels on the road with accurate, direct steering and plenty of grip, delivering driving dynamics that rival the Ford Fiesta. Its non-turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engines (75bhp, 90bhp, or 115bhp) require working fairly hard but reward enthusiastic drivers with a snappy manual gearbox and engaging character. Fuel economy is impressive, with official figures in the low 60s for standard models, whilst insurance groups range from 13 to 16 out of 50. Running costs are low, and Mazda offers fixed-price maintenance plans. Equipment levels are generous across all trim levels, with later models featuring seven-inch touchscreens, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto as standard.
Best for: Drivers seeking a well-balanced supermini with engaging handling, low running costs, and good equipment levels; those who appreciate non-turbocharged engines and enjoy spirited driving.
Not ideal for: Buyers requiring maximum boot space, those preferring turbocharged engines with mid-range pull, or those seeking an electric vehicle option.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mazda2 | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 30.2% | 4.3/5 |
| Ford Fiesta | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 33.8% | 4.4/5 |

| Vauxhall Corsa | 3/5 | 4.5/5 | 29.6% | 4.2/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Mazda2 if: You seek a well-balanced supermini with engaging handling, low running costs, and generous equipment; you appreciate non-turbocharged engines and enjoy spirited driving.
Consider alternatives if: You require maximum boot space, prefer turbocharged engines with strong mid-range pull, or need an electric vehicle option.
Competitive Position: The Mazda2 (2015-present) is an underrated contender in the supermini segment, offering a compelling all-round package that rivals the Ford Fiesta for driving dynamics and the Volkswagen Polo for equipment levels. Whilst it may not match the Polo's premium appeal or the Corsa's affordability, the Mazda2 delivers excellent value with engaging handling, low running costs, and a well-appointed interior. Its non-turbocharged engines require more revving than turbocharged rivals, but reward drivers with character and efficiency. For those who appreciate a car that's good to drive and economical to run, the Mazda2 is well worth considering.

4.6 Overall rating
(5 reviews)With a smooth transmission and clutch, this easily maneuverable car presents an excellent value for money. Mazda 2 comes with a range of tech goodies such as built-in navigation, and as a compact hatchback, it is a great competitor for a Corsa or Fiesta. Very happy with the purchase!
Great car. Easy to maneuver and really good heating/cooling system.
Wet tidy car inside and out, basic radio hit ok, pulls well up hills - brilliant for where I live- overall very pleased with car and service received
Very comfortable light care, enjoyable to drive and keeps you on your toes even with its low horse power of 85 and this cheap car insurance and road tax can’t go wrong.
Nice enough car but is a very low ride, not much adjustment in driver seat to compensate for this. Main bug Bear though is that it has no rear parking camera OR parking assist sensors!
