Mazda2 (2015-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Improved safety after 2020 refresh | Boot is on the small side |
| Low running costs | Non-turbocharged engines can feel flat |
| Fun to drive | No EV model offered |
Quick Summary
The Mazda2 (2015-present) is an appealing and often overlooked supermini that delivers an impressive all-round package. Now in its fourth generation, it features a distinctive front grille and sporty bodywork that has been kept fresh through minor updates in 2018 and a full facelift in late 2019. With a relatively long wheelbase and compact overhangs, the Mazda2 offers good interior space by supermini standards, though its 280-litre boot is smaller than newer rivals like the Skoda Fabia. The well-laid-out dashboard and mix of hard and soft-touch plastics create a cabin that feels a step above budget offerings.
Where the Mazda2 truly excels is on the road, with accurate steering, plenty of grip, and engaging handling that rivals the Ford Fiesta. Its non-turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engines (75bhp, 90bhp, or 115bhp) require working fairly hard but reward drivers with excellent fuel economy in the low 60s and low running costs. Equipment levels are generous across the range, with even entry-level models featuring air conditioning, whilst higher trims offer touchscreen navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and leather upholstery. Insurance groups are reasonable (13-16 out of 50), and Mazda offers fixed-price servicing options.
Best for: Drivers seeking a fun-to-drive supermini with low running costs, those prioritising good handling and engaging driving dynamics, and buyers wanting generous equipment levels without premium pricing.
Not ideal for: Those needing maximum boot space, drivers wanting turbocharged engines with more mid-range pull, or buyers seeking an electric vehicle option.

The Verdict
You should buy the Mazda2 if: You're seeking a fun-to-drive supermini with low running costs, prioritise good handling and engaging driving dynamics, or want generous equipment levels without premium pricing.
Consider alternatives if: You need maximum boot space, prefer turbocharged engines with more mid-range pull, or require an electric vehicle option.
Competitive Position: The Mazda2 (2015-present) is an excellent all-round supermini that often goes under the radar in a crowded market. Whilst it may not match the Volkswagen Polo for premium appeal or offer the boot space of newer rivals, its engaging driving dynamics rival the Ford Fiesta, and its low running costs and generous equipment levels make it outstanding value. The Mazda2 is a well-deserved contender that rewards drivers who look beyond the obvious choices, offering a compelling blend of practicality, enjoyment, and affordability.

4.7 Overall rating
(10 reviews)With a smooth transmission and clutch, this easily maneuverable car presents an excellent value for money. Mazda 2 comes with a range of tech goodies such as built-in navigation, and as a compact hatchback, it is a great competitor for a Corsa or Fiesta. Very happy with the purchase!
Great car. Easy to maneuver and really good heating/cooling system.
Wet tidy car inside and out, basic radio hit ok, pulls well up hills - brilliant for where I live- overall very pleased with car and service received
Very comfortable light care, enjoyable to drive and keeps you on your toes even with its low horse power of 85 and this cheap car insurance and road tax can’t go wrong.
Nice enough car but is a very low ride, not much adjustment in driver seat to compensate for this. Main bug Bear though is that it has no rear parking camera OR parking assist sensors!
