Mazda2 (2015-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Improved safety after 2020 refresh	Boot is on the small side
Low running costs	Non-turbocharged engines can feel flat
Fun to drive	No EV model offered

Quick Summary

The Mazda2 (2015-present) is an often-overlooked supermini that deserves far more attention than it receives. Now in its fourth generation, it combines distinctive styling with impressive driving dynamics and practicality. Available since 2015 with updates in 2018 and a full facelift in late 2019, the Mazda2 features a sporty appearance and well-proportioned bodywork. Whilst boot space of 280 litres is smaller than some rivals, the interior offers good headroom and knee room for four adults, with a well-designed dashboard and a mix of hard and soft-touch plastics that feel more upmarket than budget competitors.

The Mazda2 excels on the road, offering accurate steering, plenty of grip, and engaging handling that rivals the Ford Fiesta. Its non-turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engines (75bhp, 90bhp, or 115bhp) require working harder than turbocharged alternatives but reward drivers with excellent fuel economy of 55–62mpg in real-world conditions. Running costs are low, with insurance groups ranging from 13 to 16, and Mazda offers fixed-price servicing. The 2020 facelift brought enhanced safety features and improved equipment levels, including seven-inch touchscreens with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on later models. As a used car, the Mazda2 represents excellent value for those seeking a well-rounded, economical, and enjoyable supermini.

Best for: Drivers seeking a fun-to-drive, economical supermini with low running costs, those valuing engaging handling and good build quality, and buyers looking for a stylish alternative to mainstream rivals.

Not ideal for: Those requiring maximum boot space, drivers preferring turbocharged engines with more mid-range pull, or buyers seeking an electric vehicle option.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Mazda2 if: You seek a fun-to-drive, economical supermini with low running costs, value engaging handling and good build quality, or want a stylish alternative to mainstream rivals.

Consider alternatives if: You require maximum boot space, prefer turbocharged engines with more mid-range pull, or are seeking an electric vehicle option.

Competitive Position: The Mazda2 (2015-present) is a strong all-rounder in the supermini segment, offering excellent driving dynamics, low running costs, and distinctive styling. Whilst the Volkswagen Polo commands a premium for badge appeal and the Ford Fiesta matches it for handling, the Mazda2 delivers superior value and a more engaging driving experience than the Vauxhall Corsa. Its overlooked status makes it an excellent choice for discerning buyers who prioritise driving enjoyment and practicality over mainstream popularity. The 2020 facelift brought enhanced safety and equipment, further strengthening its proposition as a used buy.
