Mitsubishi L200 (2015-2019) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Affordable running costs	Some rivals have bigger load beds
Lots of toys if you choose Warrior or Barbarian spec	Needs more frequent servicing than some competitors
Strong 2.4-litre diesel engine	A Ford Ranger is better to drive

Quick Summary

The Mitsubishi L200 Series 5 (2015-2019) is one of the cornerstones of the UK's pickup market, combining affordability with practicality and refinement. Launched in 2015, this generation represented a significant step forward with a new 2.4-litre MIVEC diesel engine, improved suspension, and enhanced steering. Available as a double cab, single cab, or club cab, the L200 caters to both work and leisure users. The double cab offers dual-purpose appeal with four doors and a second row of seats, whilst single and club cab variants prioritise load bed space for commercial use. An update in 2018 brought chassis reinforcement and increased the towing limit to 3.5 tonnes.

The 2.4-litre diesel engine is a standout feature, available in 151bhp or 178bhp configurations, paired with either a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic gearbox. Fuel economy is impressive, with the manual achieving 44.1mpg and the automatic 39.2mpg. Running costs are kept low through efficient engines and reasonable insurance premiums, though servicing is required every 12,500 miles—more frequently than some rivals. The L200 handles well for a pickup, with a reduced turning circle of 11.8 metres and sophisticated Super Select 4x4 system on higher trims, making it capable off-road. Standard equipment is generous, particularly on Warrior and Barbarian models, which include leather, satellite navigation, and touchscreen infotainment.

Best for: Buyers seeking an affordable, practical pickup combining work capability with family-friendly features, those prioritising low running costs, and outdoor enthusiasts wanting a capable off-road vehicle.

Not ideal for: Those requiring the largest load beds, drivers wanting the most refined driving experience, or buyers seeking the longest service intervals.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the L200 if: You're seeking an affordable, practical pickup combining work capability with family-friendly features, prioritising low running costs, or wanting a capable off-road vehicle.

Consider alternatives if: You require the largest load beds, desire the most refined driving experience, or prefer the longest service intervals between maintenance.

Competitive Position: The Mitsubishi L200 (2015-2019) is a strong contender in the pickup market, offering excellent value and practicality. Whilst rivals like the Ford Ranger provide superior driving dynamics and the Toyota Hilux offers greater prestige, the L200 holds its own with affordable running costs, generous standard equipment on higher trims, and capable off-road credentials. The 2.4-litre diesel engine delivers impressive fuel economy and sufficient power for towing and heavy loads. For budget-conscious buyers seeking a versatile pickup that balances work and leisure use, the L200 remains a sensible choice, though more frequent servicing than some competitors should be factored into ownership costs.
