Nissan Leaf (2017-2024) Pros and Cons

Pros Cons
Lots of space in the cabin Not compatible with CCS charging
Affordable for a family EV Driving position is short on adjustment
Extremely cheap to run Many rivals will go further on a full charge

Quick Summary

The Nissan Leaf (2017-2024), the second-generation model, represents a significant step forward in electric family hatchbacks. With sharp, modern styling that doesn't deliberately stand out, it offers a practical 435-litre boot and generous passenger space—more than a Ford Focus. The Leaf is available with a 40kWh battery (168-mile range) or the larger 62kWh Leaf e+ (239-mile range), though real-world figures are typically lower. Charging from a 7kW home wall box takes under seven hours for the standard model and 11 hours for the e+, whilst rapid charging via CHAdeMO delivers 100 miles in around 60 minutes.

Running costs are exceptionally low at around 5p per mile on standard electricity tariffs, with servicing from just £100 for a minor service at Nissan dealers. The Leaf feels reassuringly normal to drive with a punchy 148bhp electric motor, smooth acceleration, and standard autonomous emergency braking. Every model includes an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, whilst higher trims feature semi-autonomous ProPilot assistance. However, the restrictive driving position, lack of CCS rapid charging compatibility, and shorter range compared to newer rivals like the Kia e-Niro are notable drawbacks.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking an affordable family electric car, those with access to home charging, and drivers prioritising low running costs and spacious interiors.

Not ideal for: Those requiring maximum driving range, drivers needing extensive steering wheel adjustment, or those wanting CCS rapid charging compatibility for long-distance travel.

The Verdict

You should buy the Leaf if: You're seeking an affordable family electric car with spacious interiors, low running costs, and access to home charging for daily commuting.

Consider alternatives if: You require maximum driving range, extensive steering wheel adjustment, or CCS rapid charging compatibility for frequent long-distance travel.

Competitive Position: The Nissan Leaf (2017-2024) is a sensible, affordable option in the electric family hatchback class, offering excellent interior space, generous standard equipment, and exceptionally low running costs. Whilst newer competition has leapfrogged it in several areas—particularly the Kia e-Niro's superior range and CCS compatibility—the Leaf remains a worthy choice for budget-conscious buyers. Its main advantage is greater availability and more competitive finance offers than longer-range rivals, making it an excellent option when alternatives have longer waiting lists. The lack of CCS rapid charging and shorter range compared to competitors are notable limitations, but the Leaf's affordability and practicality make it a compelling proposition for those prioritising value and everyday usability.

The leaf is a great vehicle, well built, sturdy, quiet with all the requisite features you want or need in a car. The range is good, and best of all you can charge it at home

It should be remembered that the Leaf is on its second generation model and has sold nearly half a million. It may be short on chargeable miles, but has 10 years of construction/usage behind it. It has plenty of room, is well equipped and has good performance, with a very good reputation for reliability. Because of this, it stands alone in the market place and is a steal on the second-hand market.

Battery capacity is a big problem. with full heating on and driving for 1.7 miles, the range just dropped by 14 miles! Not great to use in cold countries even for short trips. Mileage anxiety will be a constant stress. Otherwise, the car drives fantastic!
