Omoda 5 (2026) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Very keen prices	Petrol powertrain feels half-finished
Generous luxury equipment	Below-par ride and handling
Decent interior quality	Not as practical as rivals

Quick Summary

The Omoda 5 is a mid-size family SUV from Chinese manufacturer Chery, launched in the UK in late 2024. It's sized similarly to the Nissan Qashqai and features impactful angular styling with a coupe-like roofline. Available in petrol, self-charging hybrid, and fully electric forms, the Omoda 5 tempts buyers with very competitive pricing, generous standard equipment, and convincing interior quality. Prices start at around £24,000 for the petrol Knight trim, significantly undercutting established rivals like the Qashqai and Peugeot 3008.

However, the petrol version has fundamental dynamic shortcomings, particularly an oversensitive and inconsistent throttle pedal that makes smooth driving exceptionally difficult. The ride and handling are below par for the class, and fuel economy of just 31.1mpg is disappointing. The newer SHS-H hybrid and electric E5 versions may address some weaknesses, offering better efficiency and smoother powertrains. Practicality is adequate rather than impressive, with a modest 380-litre boot and tight rear legroom. The infotainment system, whilst feature-rich, suffers from poor usability and unreliable voice control.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a stylish SUV with generous equipment, those considering the hybrid or electric variants, and customers prioritising low purchase prices over driving refinement.

Not ideal for: Drivers valuing smooth, predictable throttle response and refined powertrains, those requiring class-leading practicality, or buyers seeking the finest ride and handling in the mid-size SUV segment.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Omoda 5 if: You're seeking a stylish, keenly priced mid-size SUV with generous standard equipment, or considering the hybrid or electric variants for improved efficiency and refinement.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise smooth, predictable driving dynamics, require class-leading practicality, or value proven reliability and established brand heritage.

Competitive Position: The Omoda 5 is an ambitious newcomer to the mid-size SUV market, undercutting rivals on price and equipment generosity. However, it falls short of established competitors like the Nissan Qashqai and Kia Sportage in driving refinement, ride quality, and practicality. The petrol version's throttle inconsistency and poor fuel economy are significant drawbacks, though the newer hybrid and electric options show promise. For budget-conscious buyers willing to overlook dynamic shortcomings, the Omoda 5 offers compelling value, but those prioritising overall quality and refinement should consider more established alternatives.
