Love the Peugout 308 nice to drive, nice interior. Good value for money for the age of the car and mileage. Handles well on country roads.

It’s a very comfortable, safe and secure vehicle for all type of driver and age. I would never change it for any other model in its category. I would sell it only because I live in Italy now and the steering wheel is on the right side.

Peugeot 308 (2013-2021) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Understated good looks | Not a driver's car |
| The estate is extremely practical | Cramped rear seats |
| Solid build quality | Reliability is a concern |
Quick Summary
The Peugeot 308 (2013-2021) is a stylish and refined family hatchback that won the prestigious 2014 European Car of the Year award. Available as both a five-door hatchback and the spacious 308 SW estate, it offers an interior with premium appeal and a distinctive design featuring a small steering wheel positioned above the instrument cluster. The hatchback provides 470 litres of boot space, expanding to 1,309 litres with rear seats folded, whilst the SW estate boasts an impressive 660 litres, expanding to 1,775 litres—rivalling the Skoda Octavia for practicality.
The 308 features an extensive engine range, including efficient 1.2-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel options, with the 1.6 HDi diesel being particularly popular. For those seeking performance, the GTi variants deliver genuine thrills with up to 267bhp, offering an engaging and fun driving experience. Running costs are competitive, with excellent fuel economy and low CO2 emissions keeping VED and insurance costs reasonable. However, rear legroom is limited in the hatchback, and reliability concerns require careful pre-purchase inspection. The 2017 facelift introduced Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, enhancing the infotainment system.
Best for: Buyers seeking a stylish, practical alternative to mainstream rivals, families needing estate space, and those interested in an affordable performance option with the GTi variant.
Not ideal for: Those requiring spacious rear seating, drivers prioritising engaging handling, or buyers concerned about long-term reliability.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Peugeot 308 | 3/5 | 4.9/5 | 48.3% | 4.3/5 |
| Volkswagen Golf Mk7 | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 37.8% | 4.5/5 |
| Vauxhall Astra | 3/5 | 4.6/5 | 33.2% | 4.2/5 |
| Ford Focus Mk3 | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 33.2% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the 308 if: You seek a stylish, practical alternative to mainstream rivals, need an estate with exceptional space, or want an affordable performance option with the GTi variant.
Consider alternatives if: You require spacious rear seating, prioritise engaging handling, or have concerns about long-term reliability.
Competitive Position: The Peugeot 308 (2013-2021) offers a distinctive and stylish alternative to conventional rivals like the Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra. Whilst it may not match the Golf's premium feel or the Focus's engaging dynamics, the 308 excels in practicality—particularly the SW estate—and offers excellent value with a high percentage of good and great deals available. The GTi variant provides genuine performance thrills at an accessible price point. Reliability concerns require careful inspection, but for buyers seeking something different with strong practicality and style, the 308 represents a compelling choice.
