Peugeot 308 (2026) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
High-tech interior	Rivals offer better practicality
Wide range of engines	Quirky driving position won't suit everybody
Affordable running costs	Choppy low speed ride

Quick Summary

The Peugeot 308 (2026) is a stylish and broadly defined family hatchback that blends contemporary design with practical versatility. This third-generation model represents a significant step upmarket for Peugeot, featuring sharp styling, a minimalist screen-focused interior, and a plush cabin with classy materials. Available in hatchback or estate (SW) body styles, the 308 offers an impressive array of powertrains including fully electric, petrol-hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and diesel options, with no manual gearbox or all-wheel-drive variants available.

The 308 delivers an engaging driving experience with responsive steering and keen cornering ability, though refinement varies by powertrain. The plug-in hybrid achieves 0-62mph in 7.9 seconds, whilst the hybrid manages 9.3 seconds and the e-308 takes 9.8 seconds. Running costs are competitive, with the hybrid achieving 48.5-62.6mpg and the plug-in hybrid managing 106.9-148.1mpg in official tests. Boot space ranges from 412 litres in standard models to 599 litres in the estate, with the quirky I-Cockpit driving position and minimalist dashboard offering a distinctive, modern cabin experience that won't appeal to everyone.

Best for: Style-conscious buyers seeking a modern, tech-rich family hatchback with multiple powertrain options, those valuing affordable running costs, and drivers comfortable with an unconventional driving position.

Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising maximum practicality, those seeking traditional driving positions, or drivers wanting the sharpest handling in the class.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the 308 if: You value contemporary styling, a high-tech interior, multiple powertrain options, and affordable running costs, and are comfortable with an unconventional driving position.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum practicality, prefer traditional driving positions, or seek the sharpest handling in the class.

Competitive Position: The Peugeot 308 (2026) is a compelling choice in the family hatchback segment, offering distinctive styling and impressive technology at competitive prices. Whilst the Skoda Octavia edges ahead with superior practicality and the Volkswagen Golf commands a premium for its badge appeal, the 308 delivers excellent value with its wide powertrain range and modern interior. The Vauxhall Astra provides a more affordable alternative, but the Peugeot's high-tech features and design flair make it an attractive proposition for style-conscious buyers seeking versatility and reasonable running costs.
