The Omoda 5 is a sharply styled, aggressively priced family SUV that offers lots of standard equipment, a smart-looking cabin and a long warranty. On first impressions, it looks like a credible alternative to more familiar rivals such as the Nissan Qashqai, Peugeot 3008 and Kia Sportage, especially now the range includes petrol, hybrid and electric versions.

Look a little closer, though, and the Omoda 5 is less convincing. The petrol version we tried suffered from an unpolished powertrain and disappointing fuel economy, plus a ride and handling balance that trails the best in the class. Practicality is only average, too, and the infotainment system can be frustrating. The price and equipment are tempting, but buyers should go in with their eyes open.
